Expos blank Royals in 1st game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Zach Day pitched a six-hitter for his second career shutout, and the Montreal Expos ended a three-game skid with an 8-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday.

After Wednesday night's game was rained out, the start of this one was delayed by showers for 1 hour, 52 minutes.

Brad Wilkerson homered and drove in three runs for the Expos, who won for just the fifth time in 17 games. Jamey Carroll, getting a rare start at second base, scored three runs and had three of Montreal's 16 hits. Orlando Cabrera also had three hits.

Day (5-6) struck out four and walked none, the 10th time in 12 starts this season he's allowed three runs or fewer. His only other complete game was a shutout at Milwaukee on May 1, 2003.

Dennys Reyes (2-1) allowed 11 hits and five runs in 6 2-3 innings.

Tomo Ohka (3-5) was to start the nightcap against Kansas City's Jimmy Gobble (3-3).

Tony Batista made it 5-0 in the seventh with a sacrifice fly off Reyes. The Expos added three in the eighth on Wilkerson's leadoff homer off Nate Field, Jose Vidro's RBI single and a throwing error by left fielder Byron Gettis.

Cabrera had an RBI single in the first, and Reyes walked Carroll with the bases loaded. Vidro's groundout made it 3-0 in the second, then Wilkerson hit an RBI single in the fifth.

Notes: The 16 hits were one shy of Montreal's season high. ... Royals DH Ken Harvey went 0-for-4 in his first game since colliding with RHP Jason Grimsley on Sunday, ending his career-best 15-game hitting streak.
