FORT MILL, S.C. -- Andres Torres fell a base hit short of the cycle and Jason Grilli pitched a three-hitter as Charlotte took the first game of a doubleheader, 8-0, over Richmond on Tuesday.
Torres tripled and scored in the fourth inning, had a three-run homer in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth for the Knights. Torres might have gotten one more crack at a single, but each game of a doubleheader is only seven innings long.
Grilli (3-4) made sure this one wouldn't go longer than it had to. He gave up two singles in the second, a hit in the third and nothing else the rest of the way.
Richmond starter Sam McConnell (3-4) gave up seven runs on six hits and took the loss.
