Mrs. Gwinne Stokes (AUGUSTA, Ga.)



AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mrs. Gwinne Harper Stokes, 70, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Mrs. Stokes was the daughter of the late Penic Bell and Lucy Pearl Burton Harper. She proudly served as an educator in the Athens, Clarke County, Columbia County, Augusta and the Atlanta Public School Systems for over 30 years. After retiring as a teacher, she diligently worked for the University of Georgia Extension Services going out into the community to advocate the use of car seats for Georgia's babies and small children. She was fondly referred to as the "the Buckle-Up Lady". She served as the former First Lady of Antioch Baptist Church, Augusta. She was also the former First Lady and long time member of Grace Covenant Baptist Church. She leaves to celebrate her life a husband, the Rev. Charles L. Stokes; six children, Kameshia Stokes Thomas, Kenya Darrell Stokes, Katonya Stokes Caldwell, Karland DeJuan Stokes, Katoria Stokes Williams and Krystia Daphan ese Stokes; their spouses, a host of grandchildren, and close family friends. Memorial services will be held at Watkins Funeral Home on Sunday, May 16, 2004, at 6 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Monday, May 17, 2004, at 1 p.m., at Zion Hill Baptist Church, located at 815 Lynhurst Drive, Atlanta.
