I find it difficult to understand the decision to hire a private company to provide the food services currently provided by the Senior Citizens Council.
The council uses the money not only to provide the meals but also provides many other services to our senior citizens. The money stays in our community, and has an economic impact.
In addition, many volunteers work with the Senior Citizens Council. The Augusta Arts Council, Fort Discovery and the Chamber of Commerce all receive help from volunteers. Maybe the Florida company would be willing to donate part of the profit to continue to fund the cost of recruiting and training volunteers. However, it is most likely the private company will provide the meals and take any additional monies as profit.
Since it is a Florida company, the economic benefits will be realized in Florida, and our senior citizens will lose many services.
