First, I would like to congratulate Greenbrier High School for winning the Region 3-AAAA baseball championship. But after reading the article in The Augusta Chronicle (May 7), I had a few concerns.
Michael Newman not only pitched a superb game against one of the top teams in the state, but also had an excellent day on offense. But the article had a picture of Scott Wandless pumping his fist after recording the last out.
The caption under Scott's picture gave him credit for saving the game. In reality, he finished the game, but coming in with two outs in the seventh inning with Greenbrier winning by five runs does not constitute a save.
Scott is an exceptional athlete who has been a major factor in Greenbrier's success over the past few seasons, but the day clearly belonged to Newman, and I believe he deserved to have his picture in the paper after winning the region championship game, rather than Wandless. Let's give credit where credit is due.
