U.S. grouped with Sweden, Russia in Olympic hockey



PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- The United States will play Sweden and Russia in its hockey group at the 2006 Turin Olympics.

Canada will face the Czech Republic and Finland in the other group announced Sunday by the International Ice Hockey Federation.

The seedings in each of the two six-team groups have been determined by the 2004 world rankings. Canada leads the rankings ahead of Sweden, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The United States is sixth.

Nine of the 12 spots for Turin are set. The top four teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

Group A: 1, Canada; 4, Czech Republic; 5, Finland; 8, Germany; 9, Qualifier; 12, Italy (host).

Group B: 2, Sweden; 3, Slovakia; 6, United States; 7, Russia; 10, Qualifier; 11, Qualifier.
