On the road

I'm a road runner, baby

Can't catch up with me

I'm a road runner, baby

Woo, you can't catch up with me

Celebrating the vegetable that made them famous, the people of Vidalia pull out all the stops for the annual Vidalia Onion Festival, taking place through Sunday. Events include a Friday night street dance, an air show, arts and crafts, a rodeo, beauty pageants and, predictably, an onion-eating contest. For information or a schedule of events contact the Vidalia Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau at (912) 538-8687.

Although fewer in numbers than they were in the shrimping heyday, the commercial fishermen of Georgia's coast still face considerable danger at sea. For that reason, the Blessing of the Fleet, now in its 65th year, has become an important tradition. This year's Blessing takes place Sunday in Brunswick. Admission to all Blessing events is free. For more information, call (912) 265-3249 or (912) 265-4032.
