The Augusta Rams baseball team will be out of business by the end of May unless attendance at home games picks up sharply at once, President Jack Connell of the local baseball club said yesterday.

Mr. Connell, revealing that the club failed to meet its semimonthly payroll on April 30, painted a dreary picture of decreasing attendance and accumulating debts that will surely force the club to the wall.

"We are not asking for sympathy or charity," Mr. Connell declared. "We are presenting a good brand of baseball that is worthy of support."



NORTH AUGUSTA PRAYER BREAKFAST: In recognition of National Day of Prayer, the City of North Augusta is holding the 15th annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at 6:45 a.m. at the North Augusta Community Center, 101 Brookside Drive. Mayor Lark Jones and Furman University President David E. Shi will speak. Tickets cost $10 for individuals, and a table of eight costs $70. Tickets are available at the North Augusta Parks and Recreation Department, North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, North Augusta Community Center, Parks Pharmacy and North Augusta churches.

SPRING CONCERT: The Aiken Center for the Arts will hold the Aiken Regional Chamber Orchestra Spring Concert at 7 p.m. at the Aiken Center, 122 Laurens St. S.W. The orchestra is composed of youths in grades four through 12 and is under the direction of University of South Carolina Aiken professors Richard Maltz and Laura Tomlin. The concert is free. Here are some ways to help children learn about the world of work, from Ellen Galinsky's book Ask the Children.

  • Have the children visit - and even help you out - at work. Or take pictures of your workplace so they can envision it.
  • Share information about your job and interesting experiences at work. Welcome your child's questions about work, and answer them directly and honestly.
  • Explain the reasons why you work and why you like your work. If you don't like it, you can also share some of those reasons.
  • Sense when to stop talking about your work.
  • Young children learn through play. Encourage them to play different jobs, from office worker to airplane pilot.
  • Invite house guests to describe their occupations to your children.

    In a test, athletes ran faster, had stronger hand grips and did more pushups when they smelled peppermint than when they didn't.

    Peppermint did not, however, help free-throw shooting.

  • Establish and maintain a regular bedtime and wake-up time every day.
  • Find the amount of sleep you need to feel consistently refreshed.
  • Create a comfortable, quiet, clean and dark environment for sleeping. Your bed and the temperature of your bedroom should be comfortable.
  • Establish a regular pattern of relaxing behaviors for 10 to 60 minutes before bedtime, to avoid taking the day's troubles to bed.
  • Exercise on a regular basis.
  • Don't nap during the day or evening.
  • Don't eat heavy meals or drink large amounts of liquids before bedtime.
  • Don't dwell on intense thoughts or feelings before bedtime.
  • Don't lie awake in bed for long periods. If you don't fall asleep within 30 minutes, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy again.
  • Don't allow your sleep to be disturbed by your phone, pets, family, etc.
  • Don't use alcohol, caffeine or nicotine, all of which can impair your ability to sleep.
