Weather disrupts schedule again

For the second time in three days, bad weather got in the way of a GreenJackets game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Heavy rain and a puddle-covered field forced the umpires to suspend Sunday afternoon's game against the Savannah Sand Gnats. The two teams will pick up the game with two outs in the top of the second inning at 5:15 tonight.

A seven-inning game will follow the completion of the make-up game. Savannah (12-11) and Augusta (6-16) complete their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:15. The Sand Gnats lead the series 1-0 after a 4-3 win Saturday.

The Sand Gnats are in fifth place while the GreenJackets sit in last in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

STARTING STRONG: Three GreenJackets starters have ERAs under 4.00 in 13 total appearances, but they are just a combined 4-3. Poor run support and spotty relief appearances have turned solid starts into losses or no decisions for GreenJackets starters.

Jarrett Gardner (2-1, 2.93 ERA) is the only Augusta pitcher with a winning record and was on the mound Sunday when the game was suspended.

Gary Galvez (1-1, 2.42) leads the GreenJackets and is 15th in the SAL in ERA. He's made four starts but didn't get his first win until Wednesday against Charleston. In that game, Galvez gave up one run on two hits in seven innings.

Jose Vaquedano (1-1, 3.00) is the only other Augusta starter with a sub-4 ERA. Vaquedano gave up two runs, one earned, in seven innings in Saturday's loss to the Sand Gnats. He struck out seven, but left trailing 2-1. After taking the lead in the eighth, the GreenJackets lost the game with two errors in the ninth.

MOSS HEATS UP: Outfielder Brandon Moss has been one of the few bright spots in the GreenJackets' lineup this season. The left-hander has a 12-game hitting streak and is fourth in the SAL with a .357 average.

He also leads the GreenJackets with 14 RBI.

DISABLED LIST: Right-handed pitchers Arthur Santos and David Penny and outfielder Robert Evans are all on the disabled list. Right-handers Milton Tavarez and Elpibo Hilaro and center-fielder Kevin Jordan were called up in their places.

Santos has only pitched w of an inning, while Penny was 0-1 with an 8.68 ERA in 12q. Tavarez has a 5.84 ERA in 12q. Hilaro has made three appearances with a 13.50 ERA.

Jordan is batting .194 with four RBI, while Evans was hitting .128 with no RBI.
