COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Steven Head threw a four-hit complete game and hit a home run to lift Mississippi to a 6-1 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.
Head (6-1) notched his second complete game of the season. He also added a bit of power when he hit a solo homer, his 11th blast of the season, in the second inning to start the Rebels scoring. Head was also hit by a pitch and scored in the sixth and singled in the ninth.
But it was Head's pitching the Gamecocks couldn't figure out. Head gave up a double to Steve Pearce and an RBI single to Hank Parks in the second as South Carolina tied the game at 1-all. The only other hit Head gave up after that was an infield single in the seventh by Steven Tolleson.
Head struck out eight and walked four.
Matt Campbell (6-3) had trouble with the bottom of Mississippi's lineup. The last four batters in the order combined for 10 of the Rebels' hits. Brian Pettway, Barry Gunter and Mark Wright combined for eight hits and three RBIs.
Ole Miss is 33-13, 12-8 in the Southeastern Conference. South Carolina fell to 32-12 and 10-10 in the league.
