  • The 3-AAAA Region Golf Tournament took place Friday at Waynesboro Country Club. Nine area teams participated.
  • Statesboro took first with 295, while Lakeside was second, one stroke back. Both teams will compete in the state tournament May 10 in Calhoun, Ga.

Lakeside's Ryan Blackburn took home low medalist honors. Blackburn topped Will Rodgers of Greenbrier and Matt Deal of Statesboro with a birdie on the first hole of sudden death after shooting a round of 70.

    College Football

In Columbus, Ohio, two Ohio State football players were arrested after a student said they assaulted and robbed him.

Sophomores Louis Irizarry and Ira Guilford were both suspended from the team indefinitely, and coach Jim Tressel said "it appears likely they could lose their privilege to play for Ohio State in 2004."

According to police records, the two were arrested after another student, Kenneth Graham, reported he was assaulted on campus at 3 a.m.

Guilford, 18, a 6-foot, 190-pound tailback from Hoboken, N.J., played in five games last year, rushing for 68 yards on 28 carries. Irizarry, 19, a 6-5, 235-pound tight end from Youngstown, played in seven games, mostly on special teams.

"We are aware of the situation," Tressel said in a statement. "We view it as very serious. We are looking into it aggressively to learn more about the facts."

Former Pittsburgh coach dies at 92

In Glenshaw, Pa., Robert Timmons, a former Pittsburgh basketball coach who led the team to four postseason tournaments in 15 seasons during the 1950s and 1960s, has died. He was 92.

Timmons died Thursday, the school said.

Timmons went 174-189 from 1953 to 1968. His best teams included the 1956-57 squad with Don Hennon, Julius Pegues, Bob Lazor and John Riser, and the 1962-63 team with Brian Generalovich, Calvin Sheffield, Dave Roman and Tim Grgurich.

The 1956-57 team went 16-11 and lost to Kentucky in the NCAA tournament Mideast Regional semifinal.

The 1962-63 team was 19-6 and lost to New York University in the NCAA Tournament.
