Chip Whitaker was hoping to breeze through his first-round match in the City of Augusta Match Play Championship on Saturday and conserve his energy for the quarterfinals later in the day.
It didn't work out that way on either count for Whitaker, the defending champion.
First, he had to go 19 holes to beat 14-year-old Sheperd Archie III 1-up in the opening round at Augusta Municipal Golf Course.
Then, in the quarterfinals, Whitaker's five-match unbeaten streak, dating to last year, came to an end when he lost 1-up to newcomer Chad Hossack.
The seventh-seeded Hossack, an Army specialist at Fort Gordon, birdied Nos. 11, 12, 13 and 15 to pull ahead of Whitaker.
This is the first Regions Cup tournament for Hossack, the 2000 Arizona State Amateur champion who moved here in July. The former Old Dominion golfer hasn't played in a tournament since 2000.
"To me, this is fun, to get out and play," Hossack said. "I didn't know what to expect because I'd never played the course until Friday. I always have high expectations, but I just wanted to be competitive."
Hossack, 28, is now two wins away from winning the title.
To make it to the finals, he'll have to beat Rick Howard, one of the hottest players in the field, in this morning's semifinals.
In the first round, Howard beat Paul Atchison 3 and 2 by shooting 6-under-par 65. Howard needed 19 holes in the quarterfinals to turn back Russell Maddox.
In today's other semifinal match, Brendan O'Connell will take on Evan Moody. O'Connell won his first-round match 2 and 1 over Don Smith, then beat Wendell Stulb 7 and 5 in the quarterfinals.
Moody scored one of the biggest upsets of the day when he stopped John McCormick 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals.
The finals will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the final semifinal match.
A marquee semifinal matchup in the senior division this morning pits 2003 Regions Cup Senior Player of the Year Mike Jackson against Roger Tant, the senior medalist in Friday's qualifying with 65.
In the other semifinals, Tony Kearns takes on Art Taft.
Whitaker, a Richmond County deputy sheriff, birdied the first extra hole - No. 1 on the course - to beat Archie, an eighth-grader at Langford Middle School, who hit his drive out of bounds and made bogey on the hole.
Archie, who first broke 80 when he was 11 years old, plays at First Tee of Augusta. Former executive director Blaine Patin was his instructor.
"He's going to be a real good player one day, I'll tell you that," Whitaker said of Archie.
