HISTORY: Brothers Carl and W.M. Davis, the owners of an Idaho general store, moved to Florida to open a grocery store in Miami in 1925. They later opened more locations and acquired other chains.In 1939, the family bought into the Winn & Lovett chain. In 1955, the company acquired Dixie Home Stores and changed its name to Winn-Dixie. The company, which opened its first Augusta-area store in 1979, continued to expand throughout the Southeast. Today, it runs 1,070 stores in 12 states and the Bahamas.
RECENT NEWS: The company announced last week it plans to cut 10,000 jobs by selling 156 stores and three distribution centers during the next year.
For years, workplace denizens have heard the merits of "flexibility," whether it applies to being an effective manager or a worker able to roll with the career punches.
But one leadership guru thinks the new favored attribute is "agile," like a skilled athlete mentally anticipating moves before making them.
Andrea R. Huff, the executive vice president and a coaching director at Lee Hecht Harrison, says flexibility is about reacting, while agility is about anticipating and being more aggressive.
The hierarchal style of the past is shifting to a more inclusive strategy of leading by influence, Ms. Huff wrote in a recent article. And agile managers are likely to have more influence with their employees, she said.
