LOS ANGELES -- The ESPY Awards are going to the fans.
For the first time in the show's 12-year history, fans will vote to decide winners in 34 categories, including 17 individual sport-specific awards and 17 crosscutter awards that pit athletes from different sports against each other.
Online voting will begin June 21, when nominees are announced during an ESPN special, and end July 9.
"Turning the ESPY Awards over to the fans is completely in line with ESPN's 'Season of the Fan' celebration," Ron Semiao, senior vice president of original entertainment, said Wednesday.
Last year, winners in the 17 individual categories were decided by online fan voting. The crosscutter winners were voted on by a panel of athletes and coaches.
The awards will be taped July 14 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. The show, hosted by actor-comedian Jamie Foxx, will air July 18.
