CLEVELAND -- Indians catcher Josh Bard will be out 2 1/2 months after having lower abdomen surgery.
He was to have been the backup to Victor Martinez but got hurt late in spring training and lost the job to Tim Laker. Bard had surgery Wednesday in Philadelphia and will begin limited rehabilitation Friday in Cleveland.
He injured his lower left abdominal area running the bases March 27 against the Reds and has been on the disabled list since March 28.
Bard hit .244 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs in 91 games last season with Cleveland.
