COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina infielder Kevin Melillo will need surgery on his right wrist that could keep him out for up to a month, the school said.
Melillo has been bothered by an injury for the past few weeks. He has played in the field off and on since getting three hits in a 7-0 win over Delaware State on March 13. Melillo, who's hitting .345, has not had an at bat since then.
Coach Ray Tanner says Melillo would be operated on Wednesday and would need about three weeks to recover. Tanner has said Melillo's grip and swing is most affected by the injury.
The Gamecocks were 16-0 after Melillo's last full game. They have gone 5-4 since, including losing two of three to LSU as well as Arkansas to start Southeastern Conference play.
South Carolina had a difficult week ahead. It takes on North Carolina at Knights Castle in Fort Mill on Wednesday night, then goes to Vanderbilt for a three-game series this weekend.
