NEW ORLEANS - Veteran fullback Sam Gash signed with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, while the team cut three players, including cornerback Dale Carter.
Gash, a 13-year veteran, was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1998 and 1999. He started 10 of 16 games for Buffalo in 2003 and had 11 receptions for 83 yards. He will be counted on to replace fullback Terrelle Smith. Smith, a punishing blocker who opened holes for Ricky Williams and Deuce McAllister's 1,000-yard seasons, left for the Cleveland Browns and a four-year, $4.4 million contract.
Carter, a former Pro Bowler who signed with the Saints in 2002, was released along with defensive tackle Kevin Watson and kicker Matt Simonton.
JAGUARS: Jacksonville signed free-agent kicker Jeff Chandler on Tuesday and re-signed defensive tackle Matt Leonard.
A Jacksonville native, Chandler was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 16. He made eight of 12 field goals as a rookie and six of seven last season.
Leonard, a 6-3, 301-pound defensive tackle, played in four games with the Jaguars last season. The 24-year-old spent four weeks on the practice squad.
BILLS: Troy Vincent knows he won't be counted on to be the savior of a Buffalo team that underachieved last year - and that's fine with him.
"I'm just going to fit in," Vincent said during a telephone conference Tuesday after he signed a six-year contract with the Bills. "I didn't want to go to a place where I was the key and the main component that was going to get a team to the promised land."
The 32-year-old cornerback has played 12 seasons, the last eight with the Eagles. A 1992 first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, he has 42 career interceptions.
