ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Aiken Tech's season came to an abrupt halt Saturday as it lost 70-67 to Clinton Junior College on a last-minute shot in the NJCAA Region 10 championship game.
With the score tied at 67-67, Clinton had possession with 25 seconds remaining and set up a play for Shammoni Faulkner. Despite what Aiken Tech coach Charles Welch called "really good defense," Faulkner hit a 3-point shot with two seconds remaining for the win.
The loss ended Aiken Tech's season, because only the winners of region tournaments can advance to the next round of the NJCAA tournament.
"It's just sad to have it end," said Welch, whose team finished 29-4. "It's the end of an era, but now everyone's moving on."
Aiken Tech and Clinton had two close games earlier in the season that were decided by a total of six points.
"We expected a dogfight," Welch said. "We had a lot of opportunities."
Calvin Roland led Aiken Tech with 19 points, while A.J. Gordon contributed 13.
