Fire kills woman, two of her grandchildren

DILLON - Investigators say a malfunctioning kerosene heater likely sparked a fire that killed a woman and two of her grandchildren Thursday night.

The woman's boyfriend noticed the fire as he came home from work. He called for help and managed to put the blaze out with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Dillon County Chief Deputy Douglas Pernell said.

Adell Marie Manning-Clark, 41, and her 4-year-old grandson and 2-year-old granddaughter were overcome by smoke in a back bedroom, authorities said.

Town administrator sues mayor, council

CALHOUN FALLS - The town administrator has sued the mayor and town council, saying they failed to act on sexual harassment complaints she made about former Police Chief T. "Billy" Haynie.

Deborah Park's lawsuit names Mr. Haynie, council members and Mayor Johnnie Waller. Her suit was filed after the State Law Enforcement Division released records in a closed investigation involving complaints from 68-year-old Frances Lewis, who said Mr. Haynie came to her home and groped her.

A written statement from Ms. Parks says she asked Mr. Waller to stop Mr. Haynie from making inappropriate remarks and from touching her. She says the request went unheeded.

Police find missing woman's remains

CHARLESTON - Investigators found the remains Friday of a woman who has been missing and presumed dead since April 2001 after a man accused in her death told investigators where to find the body.

Ivory Croker told police where to find the remains of Edwina Sims, a 34-year-old mother of two, authorities said.

Her remains were discovered Friday near Moncks Corner.

Mr. Croker, 39, had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misprision of a felony, which means he lied to or withheld information from police, and was sentenced to probation.

Man killed in blast may be suspect

PICKENS - Police are trying to find out whether an unidentified man killed in a fiery car explosion near Pickens on Friday is linked to the death of a woman found stabbed to death Thursday.

Shelitha Denise Hutchinson, 27, was found dead from stab wounds Thursday.

The woman's mother, Gladys Hutchinson, told a Spartanburg Department of Public Safety officer Thursday that her daughter had left her apartment at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by her ex-boyfriend, Bobby Waters.

She said her daughter had not been seen since.
