KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii -- Stewart Ginn and James Mason topped the leaderboard at 6 under when rain and lightning stopped play Friday in the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship.
Ginn was one of five players who were able to complete the round before the suspension, shooting a 66 in windy conditions on the oceanside Hualalai Golf Club. Mason had one hole left to play.
Ginn, a 56-year-old Australian, birdied half of his first 12 holes en route to his bogey-free round. He hit 11 of 14 fairways and putted just 26 times.
Honolulu resident Dave Eichelberger and Jay Sigel were at 5 under. Eichelberger had one hole to go and Sigel had two remaining.
The $1.6 million tournament is the first of 30 official events on the 50-and-over tour. The 54-hole event features senior major champions in the last five years and tour winners in the last two seasons.
