Aiken Tech, Shine continue hot start

Reviewing and previewing local college basketball:

WHO'S HOT Curt Triplin. The USC Aiken junior center, the reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, has posted a double-double five of the past six games. He ranks 10th in the Peach Belt in points (15.9) and second in rebounds (9.6).

WHO'S NOT UNC Pembroke men.The Braves, a contender for this category every week, have lost 11 straight and are 1-12 this season. The team actually has two decent players, but just eight players on the team.

STAT OF THE WEEK Columbus State's Yandel Brown has scored a combined 60 points the past two games and leads the Peach Belt in scoring (26.2).

RANKING THE MEN'S TEAMS

1. Aiken Tech (13-3, 4-0 CJCC). Guard Darrin Shine continues to impress, averaging 11.7 points and 7.1 assists per game.

2. Paine (4-6, 3-2 SIAC). The Lions should be well-rested for tonight's matchup at Kentucky State.

3. USC Aiken (7-7, 1-2 PBC). Pacers third in conference in shooting at 47.2 percent.

4. Augusta State (4-10, 2-1 PBC). Jaguars have won two of its past three games with solid defense.

RANKING THE WOMEN'S TEAMS

1. Augusta State (12-2, 2-1 PBC). Lady Jaguars look for their third win over a ranked team when it plays at No. 2 North Florida tonight.

2. USC Aiken (10-4, 2-1 PBC). Lady Pacers outscoring opponents by nearly 15 points a game.

3. Paine (6-4, 4-0 SIAC). An 82-53 blowout of Morris College on Tuesday does wonders for confidence.

GAME OF THE WEEK Fort Valley State women at Paine, 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 (men). Paine's teams take their longest road trip of the season with games at Kentucky State tonight and at Lane College on Monday. With two days to prepare for Fort Valley, will Paine be rid of any travel lag?

THEY SAID IT "I'm used to being on teams that are good. You have that bull's-eye on your back," said Augusta State senior guard Alshaa' Hodges after the Lady Jaguars' 77-58 win over No. 24 Armstrong Atlantic State last Saturday.
