Minter deal gets trustees approval

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina's newest football assistant, defensive coordinator Rick Minter, had his two-year contract approved Thursday by the executive committee of the school's trustees.

Minter was hired Monday as coach Lou Holtz filled out the final of five staff openings since last season. Minter, most recently Cincinnati's head coach the past 10 seasons, worked as Holtz's defensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 1992-93.

Minter's deal has a base salary of $170,000 a year.

He becomes the third new hire by Holtz to receive a multiyear deal.

Receivers coach Rick Stockstill got a three-year contract worth $450,000.

Defensive backs coach Ron Cooper got an undisclosed multiyear contract. Because the total value was less than $250,000 it was not subject to approval by the trustees' committee.

Offensive coordinator Skip Holtz works under a five-year contract that automatically rolls over each season.
