Mrs. Norah Schweers (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mrs. Norah Celine Byrne Schweers, wife of the late J. Noel Schweers, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Anderson, South Carolina. Mrs. Schweers was 74. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Father Gerald P. Ragan celebrant. Burial will be at Westover Memorial Park. Mrs. Schweers was the youngest of 11 children born to Daniel and Ann Byrne. She was raised on her family's farm, "Largy", in Killybegs, Co. Donegal, Ireland. She attended Fintra Primary School, boarding school at the Convent of Mercy, Swinford, Co. Mayo and business school in Glenties. Mrs. Schweers worked at Dunlevy and Co. in Donegal Town before coming to the United States in 1958. She then worked for Monroe Calculating Company in East Orange, New Jersey and later at General Motors Company in Manhattan, New York. While visiting family in Augusta, she met J. Noel Schweers Jr. After a brief courtship , they were married and she devoted herself as a homemaker. They were married for forty years. She raised four children Ann Marie McManus, wife of Gene McManus of Augusta, Eileen Ray, wife of Roger Ray of Anderson, South Carolina, J. Noel Schweers III, husband of Natalie Dopson Schweers, of Augusta, and Sheila Nora Wallis, wife of William Wallis of Lynchburg, Virginia. She is survived by her sister, Josephine MacRory, Mt. Charles, Co. Donegal, Ireland and her brother Hugh Byrne, New Malden, Surrey, England and 27 nieces and nephews in Ireland, England and the United States. Mrs. Schweers leaves one grandson, Eugene (Mac) McManus, and seven granddaughters, Maureen McManus, Caroline McManus, Catherine McManus, Cecilia McManus, Cassie Ray, Mollie Ray and Josephine Ray. Mrs. Schweers was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Church and a volunteer for St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. In 2001 she was honored by the Irish American Heritage Society as Irish Lady of the Year. Pallbearers will be Sea n Burke, Patrick Hatch, Patrick Kelly, John Mulherin, Wesley Scott, David Selby, Joseph Walker and Dennis Welch. Memorials may be made to: St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904; or Hospice of the Upstate, Inc., 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621. A Rosary Service will be held at the funeral home, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and the family will receive friends immediately thereafter.
