Dr. Joseph Lowery, who has been considered the dean of the civil rights movement, is scheduled to speak today during an 11 a.m. tri-college Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Paine College.
The celebration begins at 11 a.m. at the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel, on Druid Park Avenue. The public is invited.
The event is co-sponsored by Paine College, the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta State University.
The Rev. Lowery is co-founder with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He served as president and chief executive officer of that organization from 1977 to 1998.
When Ebony magazine named the Rev. Lowery one of the nation's 15 greatest black preachers, they described him as the "voice of biblical social relevancy, a focused voice, speaking truth to power."
