Middle school principal resigns

Evans Middle School Principal Myrel Seigler resigned Wednesday. His resignation is effective immediately, officials said.

School Superintendent Tommy Price said he received a letter from Mr. Seigler that cited personal reasons for leaving his job.

"All this has come as a shock to me today," Mr. Price said. "I know very little at this point and to comment would be inappropriate."

Assistant Principal Vanessa Watkins will be in charge of the school until a permanent replacement is found, Mr. Price said.

"It's an unusual time of the year to find someone outside of the system who would be unencumbered by a contract," he said.

Mr. Seigler began his post at Evans Middle as principal in August 2000. Before then, he was former assistant principal at Greenbrier High School.

Mr. Seigler began his career as a special education teacher at Evans Middle School when it was Evans Junior High School.

A phone call to Mr. Seigler's home Wednesday night went unanswered.
