Golf enthusiasts from Boston and Pittsburgh and Augustans looking to travel during Masters Week should be delighted.
Nonstop air service to and from Augusta by way of US Airways will be expanded during Masters Week to include new flights to Boston and Pittsburgh and two additional daily, roundtrip flights to Charlotte.
Also, nonstop service on 50-seat regional jets will again be offered between Augusta and Philadelphia, Washington Reagan National Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York - services that were offered for the first time during Masters Week 2003.
"This is big," said Kathryn Solee, a spokeswoman for Augusta Regional Airport. "This is better than last year."
"This special service allows customers in communities throughout our network the opportunity to easily travel to one of the most anticipated golfing events of the year," said B. Ben Baldanza, of US Airways, in a news release.
Recently, US Airways decided not to apply on behalf of Augusta Regional to the US Department of Transportation for a new, year-round flight to Washington, D.C. Still, Ms. Solee said US Airways' Masters Week decision is a good sign.
"This is just confirmation that US Airways remains interested in Augusta," she said, noting that the new flights will benefit Augustans, too.
"Anybody thinking about renting their house out for Masters, there's some new destinations you might want to be looking at," she said.
She said Continental Express and Delta also are expected to announce expanded service for Masters Week.
