Authorities charged a woman's boyfriend with murder Tuesday in the death of her 4-year-old child this weekend, officials said.
Jermaine Donald Boyd, 30, of Yancey Court, was charged with murder in the death of Treymaine DaShon Berry, 4, said Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Ken Autry.
The child has become Richmond County's first homicide in 2004.
Treymaine was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital on Saturday with critical injuries, Maj. Autry said. He said the child was pronounced dead Sunday morning at 10:26 a.m. by MCG doctors.
Treymaine's body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime laboratory in Atlanta, and officials notified investigators Tuesday that the boy died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, Maj. Autry said.
He said investigators found that Mr. Boyd was baby sitting Treymaine for the boy's mother and his girlfriend, Demetria Denise Harris, 29. Maj. Autry said Ms. Harris was not charged Tuesday in the incident.
Other children were in the house at the time of Treymaine's injuries, Maj. Autry said, but he said he did not know how many children their were, nor their ages.
Those children were placed in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services after the incident, Maj. Autry said.
He said Mr. Boyd was originally booked into the Richmond County jail Monday on a court order to show cause, unrelated to Treymaine's death.
Maj. Autry said he would not comment whether officials found any old injuries on Treymaine's body that might indicate a history of child abuse, because sheriff's investigators did not have a complete autopsy report Tuesday night.
