I read in the Jan. 2 Chronicle that the Augusta Jazz Project, founded by Dr. Rudy Volkmann, is folding. I'm writing to express my extreme disappointment, as I had just discovered the AJP at their Nov. 15 concert at the Imperial Theatre. This concert had been listed in The Chronicle's Applause calendar - just a simple line or two, naming the date and venue.
My boyfriend and I and another couple went to the concert on a whim, not really knowing what to expect but figuring for the reasonable price, we at least would have a fun evening out. We were blown away by the quality of the performance! We sat down front and thoroughly enjoyed the passion that was put into every song. I eagerly sought out the next scheduled performances, and have been telling friends and family about how great this band is. I am so disappointed to read that the Julian Smith Casino concert and the next Imperial concert (scheduled for January and February) have apparently been canceled.
I just want to tell Dr. Volkmann that I was moved by his band's music - both the familiar tunes and those new to me - the vocals and the instrumentals. I was impressed with the talent that was showcased in his group, right here in Augusta. I hope that Dr. Volkmann and the band members will still perform in some capacity in this community, and I will be watching the paper for their names.
