Looking for an innovative baby name? Think luxury

Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.

- Gerald Nachman

New year, new month.

New babies, new names.

The Wall Street Journal recently searched Social Security databases and found that many people are naming their children after luxury consumer products.

Some examples for girls include: Lexus, Armani, Infiniti and Loreal. Armani also is popular for boys, as are Cartier, Dior, Timberland and Guinness.

Closer to home, the Associated Press reports that the most popular names in South Carolina are a little more conventional.

For newborn girls, the most common were Madison, Hannah, Emily, Taylor and Anna. For guys: Jacob, James, Joshua and Matthew.

And the most popular baby boy name, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control?

I say the classics never go out of style, do they?

  • HEADLINE HELP: Yeah, I know. Doctors bury their mistakes, we print ours. Fortunately, I don't think any of these came from this newspaper.

    Some bad headlines from 2002:

"Something went wrong in jet crash, expert says"

"Police begin campaign to run down jaywalkers"

    "Iraqi head seeks arms"

"Juvenile court to try shooting defendant"

    "Cold wave linked to temperatures"

"Typhoon rips through cemetery; hundreds dead"

"Local high school dropouts cut in half"

"Hospitals are sued by 7 foot doctors"

  • THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Needing someone is like needing a parachute. If he isn't there the first time, chances are you won't be needing him again.

  • TODAY'S JOKE: Here's one shared by Billy Cooper.

A couple was driving down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither of them wanted to concede.

As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats and pigs, the wife asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"

    "Yep," the husband replied, "in-laws."
