Two teens shot in Augusta

Two Augusta teenagers were shot early this morning while walking through the woods in the Barton Village area, authorities said.

Dennis Jackson, 18, and Darryl Gibson, 19, both of the 2400 block of Amsterdam Drive, were shot about 4:30 a.m. while on a path in the woods near their home, sheriff's Maj. Ken Autry said. No arrest has been made.

Mr. Jackson was shot in the chest and was listed in fair condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, spokeswoman Danielle Wong said. Mr. Gibson was shot in the leg and was treated and released.

The teens have conflicting stories about what they were doing before the shooting, Maj. Autry said.

"One of them told us they were just walking through some path coming from a girl's house, and three shots were fired and they were hit," the major said. "The other guy also says they were walking through the path, but said they weren't coming from a girl's house, they were just hanging out."

Authorities are waiting to interview the teens again to get a better idea about what happened. Investigators have been unable to locate a crime scene, Maj. Autry said.

The 911 call from a house a few doors down from where the teen's lived. Police believe the men were shot with a handgun.

"We didn't get a projectile or shell casings," he said.
