10-year-old girl wins contest for the best holiday cookie recipe

Santa is going to be one very happy guy this year.

The Augusta Chronicle put out a call asking for people to share their favorite time-tested holiday cookie recipes for our first cookie exchange and contest.

And they responded. Boy, did they ever respond!

Twenty-nine bakers dusted off their holiday best to enter the contest, which took place Dec. 6 at Appliance Land on Washington Road. Of the 29 who entered, 23 cooks and their cookies made it to the event.

Thankfully, our judges were ready to tackle the nearly two dozen treats to crown one the best of the bunch.

Kimberly Davis, the owner of The Dessert Shop on Broad Street; Audrey Hawn, the manager of Smoak's Bakery on Walton Way; and Kristen Moyer, a baker at Very Vera, nibbled their way around a table nearly groaning with the weight of Christmas brownies, chocolate chip cookies and other delicacies.

When the dust settled and crumbs were brushed from hands and mouths, 10-year-old Chelsea Pittman of Martinez walked away with the $100 prize for her Chelsea's Frosted Christmas Jewels recipe.

To give everyone a chance to experience the sugar rush, we've printed the winning recipe, along with the recipes from all the other participants.
