Wife's health bills bury man's family in debt

An Augusta father hopes to make Christmas more special for his wife and three children this year.

About a year ago, the man's wife suffered seizures. Since then, she has been in and out of the hospital.

The mother's illness has made her unable to work, and her husband must pay high medical bills.

The man writes that he has taken money from his 401K plan to use for these bills and for his daughter, stepdaughter and son. But the money has only kept the family from "going under."

"With the loss of my wife's income and added expenses, without help I will not be able to provide a Christmas for my family," he writes. "No tree, no feast, no presents. I hope just to keep the heat on. I have always been on the end to donate. It's very difficult for me to ask, but it's for my children."

Through contributions to the Empty Stocking Fund, the family will receive gift certificates at Kroger stores for food and Kmart stores for other necessities.

Contributions can be sent to Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928. Or visit www.augustachronicle.com/emptystocking to make your donations online.
