South Carolina trounces Campbell

In Columbia, Carlos Powell scored 18 points to lead South Carolina to a victory over Campbell.

The Gamecocks got off to its best start since 1988-89. Michael Boynton hit two 3-pointers to help fuel a 23-5 run over a nine-minute span in the first half. After a timeout, Boynton fed Kerbrell Brown for a layup and then converted a Campbell turnover into a 3-pointer of his own to start the run.

The Gamecocks (6-0) held Campbell scoreless for five minutes en route to grabbing a 39-23 lead on two free throws by Tre Kelley, who was starting for injured Josh Gonner.

Gonner suffered a sprained neck Tuesday night and didn't dress against the Camels. The junior college transfer is expected to be back when South Carolina travels to The Citadel on Wednesday.
