Lady Jags take step back

AIKEN - Coach Greg Wilson welcomes the next 17 days without a game. After the way his Augusta State women's basketball team played Saturday, who could blame him?

Facing a winless Saint Pauls squad that suffered a 48-point defeat to USC Aiken on Friday night, Augusta State struggled early, but pulled away midway through the second half for a 68-54 victory Saturday in the Honda Cars of Aiken Classic.

"I'm real disappointed with this team," Wilson said. "We don't look like we want to play. ... This is a good time to see what we're doing well and what we're doing poorly."

The Lady Jaguars (4-1) showed great court vision the first eight minutes of the game. Augusta State dished out eight assists and built a 20-8 lead. The rout appeared to be on, but never materialized.

Augusta State scored one basket the next 8:09, and suddenly, a Lady Tigers team that lost to USC Aiken, 93-45, had renewed life. Tyanka Lee converted a three-point play to cap a 14-2 spurt as Saint Pauls knotted the game at 22-all.

The Lady Jaguars led by three at halftime, but took advantage of the Lady Tigers' poor shooting. Saint Pauls (0-6) shot 30 percent from the field and made just two of 29 attempts from the perimeter.

Cheryl Audain scored six points during a 19-7 run to help Augusta State pull away. The Lady Jaguars led 59-43 with 8:48 remaining.

Latoya Renwrick posted a game-high 15 points, while Alshaa' Hodges and Audain each added 11.

The Lady Jaguars don't play again until Dec. 16 when they face Fort Valley State in the Conoco Phillips Classic in Aiken. Wilson said his team has to do some "soul searching" before then.

"We have a lot of talent, but it doesn't come together well," Wilson said. "I thought we turned the corner against Montevallo last week. But we took a step back in this tournament."
