BOYS BASKETBALL CAPSULES

AUGUSTA CHRISTIAN COACH: Marty Griffin, first year

2002 RECORD: 20-8

RETURNING STARTERS: F Mark Herrmann (Sr., 6-5); F Jamal Womble (Sr., 6-5); G Warren Chapman (Jr., 6-1)

OUTLOOK: The loss of Jordan Belcher and Scott Bodden will hurt, but Augusta Christian returns three starters to a squad that should be quick and athletic. Depending on how quickly it can adapt to Griffin's system, Augusta Christian could take its eighth-straight region championship.

COACH: Kevin Furtado, second year

2002 RECORD: 11-15

RETURNING STARTERS: G Patrick Welch (Sr., 6-2, 175); G Glen Miller (So., 6-0, 165), F Taylor Bird (Sr., 6-1, 170)

OUTLOOK: The team will depend on its quickness, tough defense and perimeter shooting after losing Mark Grayson and Kyle Arrington from last year's squad. Welch and Bird have to step up and provide the senior leadership needed to advance past the first round of the playoffs.

COACH: Chandler Dennard, fifth year

2002 RECORD: 25-6

RETURNING STARTERS: G Jamie Dickey (Sr., 6-0, 175); F Tripp West (Sr., 6-0, 170); F Samuel Rogers (Sr., 6-2, 175); C David Hill (Sr., 6-3, 205)

OUTLOOK: The Eagles have to be one of the favorites to repeat as Class AA state champions. Brentwood loses point guard Brad Jolley - who Dennard says was another coach on the floor - but it returns 14 players from last season. Opponents have been warned.

COACH: Clayton Parrish, eighth year

2002 RECORD: 10-15

RETURNING STARTERS: G Bob Wills (Sr., 6-0, 175); G Brandon Norman (Sr., 5-10, 170), G Josh Gardner (Sr., 5-11, 180), F T.J. Mimbs (Sr., 6-2, 175), F Chandler Harris (Sr., 6-2, 185)

OUTLOOK: The varsity experience and strong guard play will help lead the team, but the team must improve on the inside post play with the loss of Robert Pickrell.

COACH: Glenn Rocker, first year

2002 RECORD: not available

RETURNING STARTERS: F Alex Roberson (Sr., 6-3, 170), G Cliff Johnson (Sr., 6-0, 165), C Michael Shore (Jr., 6-3, 230).

OUTLOOK: The Crusaders have plenty of height and should be a good rebounding team. The only question is, where is the scoring going to come from? The graduation of Jordan Rhoades will hurt that aspect of their game.

COACH: Brent Cribb, fourth year

2002 RECORD: 7-15

RETURNING STARTERS: G Eric Kittrell (Jr.); G Stephen Rockwell (Sr.); F Gaines Story (Sr.); G Matt Sims (Jr.); F Paul Smith (Jr.)

OUTLOOK: After averaging 15 points last season, Kittrell returns to lead a team that has all five starters back from a year ago. Except for the point-guard spot, Edmund Burke has depth at every position.

COACH: Ricky Worsham, first year

2002 RECORD: 7-15

RETURNING STARTERS: G Eric Barnes (Sr., 5-8, 140); F Jimmy Griffin (Sr., 5-10, 165)

OUTLOOK: A tough year last season might not get any easier for John Hancock. Two starters return - although Barnes averaged 11 points per game last year - and with Brentwood and Briarwood in the region, it'll be tough to make the playoffs.

COACH: John Osborne, first year

2002 RECORD: not available

RETURNING STARTERS: C Adam Oglesby (Sr.); G Matt Otis (Jr.); F Rob Holley (Jr.); Ty Brett (So.); Paul Livesay (So.)

OUTLOOK: Thomas Jefferson has good talent, but most of that comes from ninth and 10th grades. It must play fundamental basketball to have a chance to win this season.

COACH: Dennis Gibson, sixth year

2002 RECORD: 23-7

RETURNING STARTERS: G Trevor Lyons (Jr., 5-6); F Craig Engle (Sr., 6-3); F Jake Bryan (Jr., 6-0)

OUTLOOK: It'll be tough for the Patriots to defend last season's state title. With the loss of three big contributors - including Tyler Lyons - they'll need to replace that floor leadership. This team should be strong defensively.

COACH: Mark Tebbs, 12th year

2002 RECORD: 18-10

RETURNING STARTERS: G Kevin Curry (Jr., 6-0, 170); F Taylor Ellison (Sr., 6-2, 180)

OUTLOOK: Westminster made a good run last year, heading to the state quarterfinals. Without graduated point guard Andrew Tyson, the squad will have a tough time making it that far. Curry will have to be big this season.
