ST. MARYS, Ga. -- The company that provides maintenance and other services at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base has declared bankruptcy.
J.A. Jones, which provides gate security, police protection, hazardous waste removal and other services on the Navy base, employs 623 civilian workers on the site.
Base spokesman Ed Buczek said operations at the south Georgia base have not been affected.
A spokesman for J.A. Jones corporate headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., said the company plans to restructure and sell the corporation, if a buyer can be found. The company is still meeting its payroll but has issued late paychecks several times, he said.
The company signed a 10-year agreement with Kings Bay in 2000, which called for the contract to be renewed on a yearly basis, Buczek said.
