Aggressive inside game helps Glenn Hills win

Tyhiesha Smith fell to the court midway through the fourth period holding her left leg.

The Glenn Hills senior center pulled her jersey over her face as the team trainer checked her leg. As it turned out, Smith suffered just a cramp and she returned to the contest.

"I've been on her about drinking water and eating bananas," Lady Spartans coach Bernard Bowman said. "I hope tonight she understands the importance of it."

Leg cramps were the only thing slowing down the Lady Spartans. The frontcourt tandem of junior forward Cortney Snowden and Smith combined with guard Keoshia Worthy for 56 points as Glenn Hills rolled to a 62-51 win over Laney on Tuesday night in the Lady Spartan Tipoff Classic.

The 5-foot-9 Snowden, who scored a game-high 27, made her presence known in the second period. With Glenn Hills (2-0) up five, she grabbed a Worthy miss and banked it in. Snowden blocked two shots on the other end and then grabbed two more offensive boards and made two more layups. The Lady Spartans led 18-9.

"We didn't box out as well as we should have," Laney coach Otis Smart said. "We had the game. We just have to box out better on the boards."

Laney (2-1) pulled to within three at halftime and then took advantage of a sloppy Glenn Hills offense. On their first five trips downcourt after the break, the Lady Spartans committed five turnovers.

Meanwhile, Jonta Moss drained a 3-pointer. Samantha Wilson made a layup and Joycelyn Nelson added another and the Lady Wildcats led 26-22.

Their advantage was short-lived, though. Snowden tied the game with a layup. She then swarmed into the paint for an offensive rebound, scored on the putback, was fouled and added the free throw. Glenn Hills led at 29-26 with 3:18 left in the third.

"Our inside game is real aggressive," said Smith, who had 13 points. "When we get it inside, we know we can score."

The Lady Spartans never trailed in the game's final 11 minutes. Snowden and Smith pounded the glass and Worthy slashed to the basket for easy buckets. Worthy, who posted 16 points, combined with Snowden to score Glenn Hills' final 18 points.
