NEW YORK -- The tribe has spoken: Elisabeth Hasselbeck is the new co-host on "The View."
Hasselbeck, who made it to the finale on "Survivor: The Australian Outback," was chosen after a three-month search for a replacement for Lisa Ling, the youngest member of the ABC talk show's panel who left last year.
"They say that life is full of choices, but boy, we had such a rough time with this one," co-host and executive producer Barbara Walters said Monday in announcing the winner. The other two finalists were Rachel Campos from MTV's "The Real World: San Francisco" and Erin Hershey Presley of the defunct ABC soap opera "Port Charles."
Walters said she and the other hosts - Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Joy Behar - took a vote. Then they held up scraps of paper with the name "Elisabeth" written on them in a send-up of the tribal council vote on "Survivor."
"I feel good sitting here," Hasselbeck, a former shoe designer and host of the Style Channel's "The Look for Less," said after taking her seat at the table. "I have to say, after last week, I was so sad to leave."
The 26-year-old also watched a recorded message from her husband, Washington Redskins quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, congratulating her on the job.
