Mr. Ed Schwabe Sr. (SWAINSBORO, Ga.)



SWAINSBORO, Ga. - Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary announces the death of Ed Schwabe Sr., age 88, of Swainsboro on Monday, November 24, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Benjy Varnell and Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Interment will be in the Swainsboro City Cemetery. Mr. Schwabe will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be former Swainsboro High School football players coached by Mr. Schwabe and members of Swainsboro Kiwanis Club. The family will receive friends at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Tuesday, November 25, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. Mr. Schwabe was a native of Crisp County and graduated from Oglethorpe University in 1939. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served as head football coach for Swainsboro High School, Johnson County and Candler County High Schools for many years. In 1950, he led the Swainsboro High School football team to an undefeated season. In 1997, Mr. Schwabe was honored by being inducted in Oglethorpe Universitys Sports Hall Of Fame. He was owner and operator of Payne-Schwabe Buick-Pontiac and was a member of the Buick Dealer Council. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, member and past chairman of the Administrative Board, a member and past president of the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club and served on the Swainsboro City Recreation Authority. Mr. Schwabe also served on the Board of Directors with First Federal Savings and Loan. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Taylor Schwabe of Swainsboro; three sons, Francis Edward Schwabe Jr. of Blacksburg, Va., Charles Taylor Schwabe of Swainsboro and Jonathan Schwabe of Cedar Falls, Iowa; four grandchildren, Clarke Schwabe and Phillip Schwabe of Swainsboro, Kate Schwabe of New York, N.Y. and Lt.
