Rabun, Lions get final roar

Augusta Christian tailback Cole Rabun might want to get angry a little more often.

First Presbyterian Day shut down Rabun in the first half Friday night at Pride Valley. Then, on his first carry of the second half, Rabun fumbled the ball away.

From there, his offensive line took over, as Rabun tallied three second-half touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 20-13 victory.

"I was very upset," Rabun said of his miscue to start the third quarter. "There was a lane there, and all I had to do was run through it."

The Vikings (2-3) didn't give the Lions (5-1) any running room in the first half. They took a 3-0 lead into the locker room and, after increasing the margin to 6-0 in the third quarter, were in position to extend their unbeaten streak against the Lions to four.

"Coach (Bruce) Lane told us at halftime that we're going to pound on them and keep pounding on them," Rabun said. "We just decided we were going to step up and pound these boys, and our offensive line had them crying for mercy."

Augusta Christian struggled offensively in the first half, but the Lions gave up just two first downs. Marcus Paschal, Drew Snelling, Dwight Banks and Sam Pitts all recorded tackles for losses to spark the defense.

Still, the Vikings had the lead and padded it after converting Rabun's fumble into a field goal midway through the third quarter.

At that point, Rabun got mad, then he got even.

He rushed for 150 yards on 20 carries in the second half. His 8-yard touchdown run late in the third led to a 7-6 lead, and the Lions were on the way to their first win in four meetings with the Macon squad.

"Our kids are still trying to overcome that Macon phobia, and we took a good step toward that tonight," Lane said. "Focus, poise and discipline - we did those things in the second half. When we took a 7-6 lead, I knew we were going to win the football game."
