Yates, Murphy, Hansen share first-round lead



ST ANDREWS, Scotland -- Scotland's Simon Yates, Denmark's Soren Hansen and Ireland's Gary Murphy shot 66s Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Dunhill Links Championship.

Yates made six birdies in a bogey-free round on The Old Course at St. Andrews. Hansen had seven birdies and a bogey at St. Andrews, and Murphy finished with seven birdies and a bogey at Carnoustie.

Darren Clarke shot a 67 at Carnoustie and was tied for fourth with Peter Lawrie, David Howell and Jamie Donaldson.

Nick Price also started at Carnoustie and was tied for eighth place after a 4-under 68.

Ernie Els and Vijay Singh opened with 72s at Carnoustie, and PGA champion Shaun Micheel and Colin Montgomerie shot 73s on the same layout.

Kingsbarns is the third course being used in the $4.8 million event. The 168 pros will play one round with amateur partners at all the courses before the field is cut for Sunday's final round at St. Andrews.
