Love isn't extinct for Barney

What keeps a purple dinosaur popular with the preschool crowd is found in his theme song, I Love You.

"I'm sincere in what I'm saying. It's all about love. Other dinosaurs didn't survive because they didn't know how to love," Barney said in a telephone interview.

Barney is part of a 15-member cast set to stage Barney's Colorful World at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center."It's so wonderful. We use our imaginations to go all over this colorful world," Barney said. "We get to go to the beach and to the Arctic."

At the beach, Barney and his friends meet a starfish who sings like Elvis. While in the Arctic, Barney puts on a pair of ice skates to skate with a dancing polar bear, one of his favorite parts of the show.

"I like my ice skating," said Barney, who admitted he had a little trouble the first few times he tried it. "It's not my best side when I fall."

The fun experience also is instructive for preschoolers, who will learn about colors, animals and geography.

The show features 28 songs, a mix of children's standards and newer songs.

Barney was created about 16 years ago, and his first video was released in 1988. Since then, the singing purple dinosaur has starred in the television series Barney & Friends, which reaches a weekly worldwide viewing audience of 11 million.

This is the third touring live Barney show. More than 3.5 million people saw Barney's Big Surprise and Barney's Musical Castle.
