Mr. Julian Roberts, Sr. (AUGUSTA, Ga.)



AUGUSTA, Ga.- Entered into rest on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at Kentwood-University Hospital Extended Care, Mr. Julian Haley Roberts, Sr., 88, beloved husband of Mrs. Ruth H. (Bobbie) Roberts. Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Steve Dodson officiating. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Roberts was a longtime Augusta resident and a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church. He was a retired real estate and automobile dealer and was the former owner of Roberts Motor Co. and Roberts-Augusta, Inc. He has served on the Board of Directors of Thomaston Mills, Citizens, and the Southern Bank of Augusta, the United States Golf Association, and was former President of Junior Achievement. He was Augusta City Amateur Golf Champion in 1949 and runner up in 1948 and 1952. In 1949, he played in the U.S. Amateur at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y. and also won the Thomaston Country Club Golf Championship in 1947. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Augusta Country Club, the Augusta National Golf Club, the Pinnacle Club, the Peachtree Golf Club, and the Augusta Assembly. He served as Special Ambassador to Ecuador during President Eisenhowers last term in office and represented the United States at the inauguration of the new president of Ecuador in 1960. In addition to his wife, Mr. Roberts is survived by a son, J. Haley Roberts, Jr., of Augusta; a daughter, Ruth Roberts Cowan, of Nashville; three brothers, Ted Roberts, of Augusta, Thomas Roberts, of Peachtree City, Dr. R.E. Roberts of East Point, Ga.; grandchildren, Ruth Morris Piltzer of Rome, Italy, Mary Morris Enkema of Franklin, Tenn., Matilda Reaney Morris of Naples, Fla., Anne Traver of Nashville, Julian H. Roberts III, of Augusta, and Michael P. Roberts of Augusta; great-grandchildren, Harrison Hall Enkema, Alexander Petrus Enkema, Isabella Morris Enkema, Grace Katherine Roberts, Ruth Walker Roberts, and Emily Akin Piltzer. Pallbearers will be Dr. Harry T. Harper, III, Dr. H. Ray Finney, John L. Merry, Jr., W.L. McCrary III, Phil S. Harison, Boone A. Knox, William E. Blanchard, Carlton S. Faulk, Dr. James T. Tippett, George F. Claussen III, and Alonzo P.
