Warrants sought in child's death

Authorities were pursuing arrest warrants Thursday for an Edgefield couple whose 14-month-old son died from head injuries, police said.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said 17-year-old Mary Dey and Devin A. Watson, 22, were being held while authorities sought warrants on charges related to child abuse.

Their son, Darrell K. Watson, was taken to Edgefield County Hospital at 8:10 a.m. with bruises covering his body, Chief Carter said.

The child died before he could be transferred to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Chief Carter said. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said pathologists in Newberry determined severe head injuries were the cause of death.

Chief Carter said Ms. Dey worked at a fast-food restaurant. Mr. Watson was unemployed, he said. The two shared a home in the 400 block of Mimms Street, just off Broad Street near downtown Edgefield. They had no other children, and no one else lived at the home, Chief Carter said.

The mother took the child to Edgefield County Hospital, but Chief Carter would not say whether she gave any explanation for the injuries. He also refused to say whether there was evidence of any old injuries on the boy or whether South Carolina Department of Social Services personnel had been involved with the family.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's child fatality task force was assisting in the investigation.
