Wie out of U.S. Women's Amateur after match-play loss

GLADWYNE, Pa. -- Michelle Wie was knocked out of the U.S. Women's Amateur in the first round of match play Thursday by Maru Martinez of Venezuela.

Martinez made a 4-foot par putt on 17 - while Wie was missing a short par - to break a tie and take a one-stroke lead. Martinez made par from 3 feet on 18 to clinch the win.

The 13-year-old Wie easily qualified for the 64-woman match-play format by shooting a 2-under 140 in two rounds of stroke play. Martinez, a 19-year-old sophomore at Auburn who made it to the Women's Amateur semifinals last year, survived a playoff to advance to match play.

Martinez, penalized a hole during the match for accepting a ride on a golf cart, finished at 2-over 73. Wie shot a 74.
