New movies today include Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde; Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines; and the animated movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, featuring voice work by Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The Augusta GreenJackets play Capital City at 7:15 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Milledge Road. Fireworks will follow. The cost is $8 for box seats, $7 for reserved seats, $6 for general admission, $5 for seniors, military and ages 4-12 and $1 for children 3 or younger. Fort Gordon gets into the holiday spirit a bit early with an Independence Day celebration at Barton Field. The event will feature fireworks, a laser light show, live entertainment and a carnival. The carnival begins at 10 a.m., with the main event at 5 p.m. Admission is free. You must have picture ID for admission to the base.

Riverwalk Special Events will sponsor a Downtown Lunch Date from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Augusta Common, 800 block of Broad Street. Local musicians will provide entertainment. Bring your lunch and enjoy the music. For more information, call 821-1754.


Boom! Augusta celebrates American Independence with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. at Riverwalk Augusta. Musical performances begin at noon at Augusta Common, and there will be crafts, pony rides and face painting. There also will be crafts and exhibitors at Eighth Street and Riverwalk. The Country Grand Slam concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium, Milledge Road. The concert will feature John Michael Montgomery and is held in celebration of centennial of South Atlantic League baseball. Swamp Saturday will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. The event will feature a 2 1/2 -mile walk through the wetlands. Bring comfortable shoes, water and insect repellent. Lifeguard-instructor training will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Aiken County Recreation Pool, 828 Richland Ave. W., in Aiken. The course will include swimming, lifeguarding, first aid and CPR.
