Mr. Joe Cassedy (EVANS, Ga.)

EVANS, Ga.- A Mass celebrating the life of Joe Ben Cassedy, of Evans, will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maurice, Louisiana, on Monday, June 30, 2003, with a burial to follow in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. He died at 2:15 a.m., June 28, 2003, of lymphoma at his brother-in-laws residence in Lafayette. Rev. O. Joseph Breaux, Pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and conduct the funeral services. Mr. Cassedy was a native of Statesboro, Georgia and a resident of Evans, Ga. For the past 26 years. He attended Statesboro High School and graduated in 1952. He attended Florida State University and McNeese State College playing football at both schools while earning his Bachelor of Science and Master Degree in Education. Mr. Cassedy worked in the Louisiana school system for 18 years teaching and coaching in the Cecilia, Franklin, Lake Charles, and New Iberia school systems before retiring and moving to Georgia. In Georgia, he worked in the Columbia County school system for 18 years at Evans High School as an assistant principal and coach. He also served in the United States armed forces for 2 years. He was inducted into the Statesboro Sports Hall of Fame for football. He is survived by his mother, Josephine Cassedy Rollison of Statesboro, Ga., his three children Kelly Lorraine Cassedy of Alpharetta, Kevin Joseph Cassedy of Evans, and Joanne Elizabeth Cassedy of Augusta, his brothers Ashton Cassedy and his wife Elaine Leblanc Cassedy of Crowley, La., James Cassedy of Statesboro, and Coley Cassedy and his wife Patricia Cassedy of Statesboro. His wife, Suzanne Villien Cassedy of Abbeville, La. and his father, Rustin Cassedy of Statesboro preceded him in death. The family is requesting that visitation be observed from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at Delhomme Funeral Home in Maurice, La. with a Mass to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. A memorial service will also be held at Platts Funeral Home in Evans, Ga. Thursday, July 3, 2003, with visitation from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a service to follow at 5 p.m. in the Platts Funeral Home Chapel. A Rosary will be prayed at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home in Maurice. Pallbearers are Allen Cassedy, Russ Cassedy, Don Ladner, John Beazley, L.D. "Biggie" Dupuis, Johnny McClelland and Aldace Hoff. Honorary pallbearers are Craig Cassedy, Collin Cassedy and Mr. Cassedys former teammates from the McNeese State College football team. The family requests that donations be made in his name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 600 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10016. (1-800-955-4LSA).
