Hewitt to open against Karlovic at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England -- Lleyton Hewitt will open his Wimbledon title defense against Ivo Karlovic, a Croat ranked 203rd.

If the top-seeded Hewitt advances as expected, the Aussie will meet another qualifier in the second round because of the withdrawal of 1996 champion Richard Krajicek.

Eighteen men's qualifiers and 13 women's qualifiers were completed Thursday.

James Blake, an American seeded 22nd, will play Australian Todd Larkham. Marat Safin of Russia will meet 318th-ranked Michal Mertinak of Slovakia and 14th-seeded Xavier Malisse will play Cyril Saulnier of France.

One American man qualified - Robert Kendrick, ranked 132. The Fresno, Calif., player reached the first round of Wimbledon last year.

Venus Williams, champion in 2000 and '01 will play Stanislava Hrozenka, a Slovakian ranked 184th, in the first round.

Carly Gullickson, the 17-year-old daughter of former major league pitcher Bill Gullickson, also made the main draw. Gullickson will play Antonella Serra Zanetti of Italy.

Lilia Osterloh of Columbus, Ohio, qualified for her sixth Wimbledon. She will play sixth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo. Her best result is the fourth round in 2000.
