Police charge man in rape

An Augusta man was charged Tuesday in the rape of a woman who lived nearby, police said.

Frederick Lorenzo McGruder, 21, was arrested at his Courtview Drive home at 5:20 a.m., said Lt. Jack Francisco of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Francisco said Mr. McGruder had knocked on the victim's front door in the Forrest Hills Racquet Club apartments near Walton Way in west Augusta about 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The victim said she opened her door and Mr. McGruder forced his way in, Lt. Francisco said.

According to police reports, Mr. McGruder threatened the victim with a razor before sexually assaulting her.

Lt. Francisco said the victim and Mr. McGruder were acquaintances.

Lt. Francisco said a records check did not indicate that Mr. McGruder had any prior convictions for sex offenses.

He was being held at the Richmond County jail Tuesday without bond, according to jail records.
