Mr. James Smith (EVANS, Ga.)

EVANS, Ga. - Entered into rest Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Doctors Hospital, Mr. James Dean "Jim" Smith, 74, husband of Helen Bredenberg Smith and son of the late Robert Clanton Smith Sr. and Cordelia Cudd. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2003, at Westover Memorial Park with the Very Reverend Neal Phelps officiating. Mr. Smith was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., and had made Augusta his home since 1955. He was a retired pharmacist. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean War Conflict having served in the U.S. Air Force and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina in Columbia with a B.S. in Pharmacy, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, The Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society and a recipient of the Merck Award. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Augusta Country Club, the Augusta Genealogical Society and the Pinckney Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. He was a life member of the Piedmont (South Carolina) Historical Society, the Augusta-Richmond County Museum and the Jamestown Society. Mr. Smith was a member of the St. Augustines Episcopal Church where he served as Junior Warden and was on the Vestry. Additional survivors include one son, Jim Cudd Smith, Gainesville, Fla.; one daughter, Marie Smith Wicker, Augusta; one sister, Laura Smith Arledge, Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Robert Clanton Smith, Jr., Marietta; four grandchildren, Brenner Louise Wicker, David Watson Wicker, Elizabeth Chandler Smith and Prestin Dean Smith and his cherished friend, Michael Charles Murphey. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorials may be made to Brandon Wilde Lifecare Resident Support Endowment, 1350 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30901-9884.
